Minister MacKay Urges Idea Sharing at Atlantic Canada Student Summit
Date: January 29, 2010

The Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, urged students today to share ideas on solving issues facing Atlantic Canada with other leaders from business, government and academia gathered at the Atlantic Canada Student Summit held at St. Francis Xavier University. Minister MacKay said the summit, supported by the Government of Canada and ACOA, is an investment in youth to continue building a stronger, more competitive and more prosperous Atlantic Canada.
“This event is an ideal venue for post-secondary students to share their ideas and discuss issues facing Atlantic Canada, while exploring their global implications with other leaders from business, government and academia,” said Minister MacKay. “Through events like the Atlantic Canada Student Summit, the Government of Canada and ACOA are investing in youth to continue building a stronger, more competitive and more prosperous Atlantic Canada. This initiative is aligned with our government’s Economic Action Plan.”
“The Atlantic Canada Student Summit is an excellent platform for students to voice their ideas and insights on Atlantic Canada’s challenges and opportunities,” said Shannon Zimmerman, President of the Dalhousie University Student Union. “The Summit provides students the chance to connect and learn from leaders within Atlantic Canada by exchanging ideas, engaging in dialogue and discussing best practices.”
Approximately 60 students from the region took part in this economic student summit, which is organized by an ACOA student steering committee.
The ACSS will help community and business leaders of the future lay the foundation for initiatives that promote new opportunities for economic growth in Atlantic Canada. Participants at the summit explored a variety of themes including: creating new opportunities and choices for people; investing for sustainable growth; and freeing businesses to grow and succeed. Speakers included student leaders and leaders from business, government and academia.
